Plans for a desalination plant in Mazotos are facing opposition from a local initiative group, which says it has collected 500 residents’ signatures and is calling for greater transparency and consultation.
In a statement, the Initiative Group for the Rescue of the Mazotos Coast said the authorities were advancing decisions affecting the community without securing public consent or providing convincing answers to residents’ concerns.
Residents raise concerns over pending court case
The group said it was particularly concerned that legal proceedings over the project were already under way and a court ruling was still pending.
Despite the ongoing case, the authorities were continuing to advance their plans, the group claimed, raising questions about institutional procedures and respect for the judicial process.
“Why is there such a rush to proceed with these plans while a court decision is pending on an issue that directly affects the environment, quality of life and the future of our community?” the statement said.
The group has called for its concerns to be addressed before further decisions are taken.
Initiative group seeks meeting with President
The group said it had requested a meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides and was waiting for a date to be set so it could present its concerns.
It said residents were seeking transparency, access to information and meaningful consultation, as well as respect for the views of the local community and the role of the courts.
“The voices of 500 residents cannot be ignored, nor can the fact that the case is before the courts be overlooked,” the statement concluded.
The statement did not provide further details about the proposed plant’s timeline or the pending court proceedings.
