Serious questions have emerged over the operation of the Paphos hospital morgue following reports that bodies are being transferred to a refrigerated container placed next to its entrance.
According to exclusive information obtained by Sigma correspondent in Paphos Marios Ignatiou, instructions were reportedly given on Tuesday to move bodies from the existing storage chambers to the container.
Beds have reportedly been installed inside the container to accommodate the bodies.
Staff raise concerns over hygiene and safety
The reported procedure has prompted concerns among hospital staff over hygiene protocols, protective measures and the movement of employees between departments.
A porter who also works in the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department is reportedly being asked to assist with the transfers whenever needed at the morgue.
Ward assistants are also said to have been asked to help move bodies, while doctors, nurses and other staff have expressed concern over the arrangement.
Questions have been raised about the procedures in place to protect employees and ensure appropriate handling and storage conditions.
No appointed mortician at the hospital
The situation is reportedly linked to ongoing operational problems at the Paphos hospital morgue, which currently has no appointed mortician.
The absence of a mortician has created difficulties in carrying out post-mortem examinations.
According to the same sources, the refrigerated container is also expected to be used for the temporary storage of bodies of people who die at the hospital, until funeral homes collect them.
The reported arrangements have raised further questions about the morgue’s capacity and the procedures being followed while staffing issues remain unresolved.
