Activists report naval encirclement
A flotilla interception unfolded overnight after organisers of a humanitarian convoy said Israeli naval forces surrounded aid vessels in international waters.
The Global Sumud Flotilla, carrying activists and humanitarian supplies towards Gaza, said it lost contact with at least 11 ships and claimed that forces intercepted several others. Organisers also said Israeli warships approached the convoy and issued threats during the incident.
The group said the flotilla travelled west of Crete when Israeli military vessels moved in and targeted ships with lasers and weapons. Organisers added that crews received orders to move to the front of their vessels and lie down.
The Gaza flotilla interception claims remain unverified, and Israeli authorities have not issued a detailed public response.
More than 50 ships joined the flotilla, which departed in recent weeks from ports in France, Spain and Italy. The convoy aims to break the maritime blockade of Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid.
Organisers say they continue their mission despite disruptions and loss of communication with parts of the fleet.
Previous maritime attempts
Another flotilla attempt in 2025 drew global attention after activists tried to reach Gaza by sea across the Mediterranean.
The latest flotilla interception adds to ongoing tensions over maritime access, security operations and humanitarian deliveries in the region.
