Google Cloud outage disrupts banks and websites worldwide

Date:

A Google Cloud outage in Western Europe is causing disruption to banks, delivery companies and popular websites, with thousands of users reporting problems with payments, bank transfers and access to online services.

Google Cloud confirmed issues affecting multiple services in its Western Europe region, which is associated with London. The incident was reported shortly after 7am UK time, with technical teams working to resolve the problems.

Banks and delivery services affected

Users reported problems with Revolut, Lloyds, HSBC, Halifax, Bank of Scotland, DPD, Royal Mail and Rightmove on the outage-tracking platform Downdetector. Other services mentioned included NHS England, NatWest, Gov.uk and Asda.

However, it has not been confirmed that all these incidents are directly linked to the Google Cloud outage.

Revolut confirmed a disruption affecting several of its services but reassured customers that their money and data remained safe. Lloyds Bank said its app was still available, although some customers were experiencing difficulties with certain online services.

Halifax also reported problems with its app and online banking services, saying it was working to restore normal operations.

The disruption has affected everyday transactions, with users reporting declined card payments, failed bank transfers and difficulties sending orders through DPD.

One Revolut customer reportedly struggled to pay at a toll booth, causing delays. A traveller in Paris also said her card had been declined twice.

Google Security Operations also affected

Google is separately investigating an incident affecting Google Security Operations.

According to the company, affected customers may experience sign-in failures and delays when using the platform.

Technical teams are continuing their recovery efforts. It remains unclear whether all the reported disruptions across the different services share the same underlying cause.
