Fidan tells Holguín two-state solution is the more realistic option

Date:

Turkey reiterated its position in favour of a two-state solution for Cyprus on Monday during a meeting between Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin.

Talks focus on Cyprus developments

According to sources from Turkey’s Foreign Ministry, the meeting reviewed the latest developments in the Cyprus issue, as well as discussions held by Holguin with both leaders in Cyprus during the previous week.

Holguin is visiting Turkey from 14 to 16 June as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts related to the Cyprus issue.

Turkey backs UN efforts

Hakan Fidan said Turkey supports the efforts of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, while reiterating Ankara’s view that the “most realistic solution” for Cyprus would involve the coexistence of two states on the island.

He also stated that approaches which, according to Turkey’s position, do not recognise the “sovereign equality” and “equal international status” of Turkish Cypriots would not lead to results.

Reference to realities on the ground

Fidan further stated that any future process should be based on what he described as the “realities on the ground”.

The remarks come as diplomatic contacts continue ahead of further discussions on the Cyprus issue under UN auspices.
