Cyprus Police arrested three motorists overnight for drink-driving offences following three separate road collisions in Nicosia and Limassol. Meanwhile, a 17-year-old driver in Paphos tested positive during a preliminary drug screening.
The incidents occurred as police continued road safety checks across the island, with authorities warning that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs remains a serious threat to road safety.
Three-vehicle collision in Dali
The first incident occurred shortly after 7:00 p.m. yesterday, when a 48-year-old man was driving along Nicosia Avenue in the Dali industrial area.
His vehicle collided with a car that had stopped at a red traffic light, causing the second vehicle to crash into a third car ahead.
Police officers attended the scene and administered a breathalyser test to the 48-year-old.
The final reading showed 78 micrograms of alcohol, compared with the legal limit of 22 micrograms.
The driver was arrested for an offence committed in the presence of police.
Driver crashes into lamppost in Limassol
In a separate incident shortly before midnight, a 35-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle near the Mesa Geitonia roundabout in Limassol.
The vehicle struck a metal lamppost, causing it to collapse onto the road.
Police officers who arrived at the scene administered a preliminary breathalyser test, which recorded 92 micrograms of alcohol, against the legal limit of 22 micrograms.
The driver was subsequently taken to the Limassol Traffic Police offices for a final breathalyser test.
However, he failed to provide an adequate sample and was arrested.
Hit-and-run collision in Engomi
A third incident occurred approximately 30 minutes after midnight, when an 18-year-old motorist was driving along Griva Digeni Avenue in Engomi, Nicosia.
His vehicle collided with another car, whose driver subsequently left the scene.
Shortly afterwards, Nicosia Traffic Police located the vehicle involved and identified its driver as a 45-year-old man.
A final breathalyser test recorded 80 micrograms of alcohol, compared with the permitted limit of 22 micrograms.
The 45-year-old was arrested.
Teenager tests positive for drugs in Paphos
In another incident at approximately 8:40 p.m. yesterday, Paphos Traffic Police stopped a vehicle in the city centre after its driver had failed to comply with a traffic sign.
Officers discovered that the driver was 17 years old and held only a learner’s driving licence.
He was driving without the supervision of a qualified licence holder, as required by law.
Further checks revealed that the vehicle had no valid insurance policy, an expired road tax licence and no valid roadworthiness certificate.
Police also identified additional traffic violations.
The teenager underwent a preliminary drug test, which returned a positive result.
His driving licence was subsequently confiscated.
Alcohol and drugs linked to nearly one in four fatal collisions
Police highlighted the continuing dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
According to police figures, nearly one in four fatal road collisions in Cyprus between 2021 and 2025 was linked to alcohol or drug use.
Authorities stressed that intensified traffic checks will continue as part of efforts to prevent road accidents and improve safety for all road users.
