Celebrations highlight EU values and unity

Europe Day is being celebrated across Cyprus with a series of events organised on 9 May, aiming to promote European identity, cooperation and shared values among member states.

According to a press release from the European Parliament Office in Nicosia, Europe Day in Cyprus represents a key moment for strengthening the sense of European belonging.

Official reception in Nicosia

On Friday at 12:30, the European Parliament Office and the European Commission Representation are co-hosting a reception at the House of Europe for diplomats, state officials and partner organisations.

Speeches will be delivered by Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna on behalf of Nikos Christodoulides, as well as EU Commissioner Costas Kadis. Representatives from the European Parliament Office in Cyprus and the European Commission Delegation will also address the event.

A musical performance will be presented by GC School of Careers under the European Parliament Ambassador School programme.

Flag-raising ceremony in Nicosia

On Saturday at 09:00, Europe Day celebrations continue in Cyprus with the raising of the European Union flag at the Old Town Hall courtyard (Davila Bastion, Eleftheria Square) in Nicosia.

Speeches will be given by the President of the Republic, the Mayor of Nicosia Charalambos Prountzos, EU Commissioner Costas Kadis, and EU Parliament Office Head Thea Pieridou.

Celebrations in Larnaca

Later the same day, at 17:00, Europe Day events will take place in Larnaca, organised in cooperation with the municipality and the European Information Centre.

The programme includes information stands from EU institutions, embassies and partner organisations.

At 18:00, the Larnaca Municipal Children’s Philharmonic Orchestra will parade, followed by the opening of a photography exhibition titled “Under the Surface: Diving into Marine Sciences”.

A recorded message from European Parliament President Roberta Metsola will be screened at 19:30, followed by musical performances inspired by Mediterranean and European music.
