Eradication of FMD in Cyprus still years away, farmers warn

Date:

EU extends restrictions on livestock movement

Cyprus still faces a long path towards eliminating foot and mouth disease, with farmers warning that full eradication could take several years, according to the president of the Pancyprian pig farmers association, Petros Kailas.

His comments come after the European Union extended restrictions linked to FMD until June 15, maintaining limits on the trade and movement of animals to prevent further spread.

“We still have years ahead”

Kailas warned that the island will not become free of FMD in the near future, even under the best-case scenario.

“The last animal that has been vaccinated may have a lifespan of 4–5 years before it is culled,” he said. “In the best-case scenario, we still have 4–5 years ahead of us during which our country will not be free of the virus.”

He stressed that FMD continues to circulate in Cyprus, adding that not all cases have been officially reported.

Ongoing vaccination efforts

Authorities continue vaccination programmes for cattle, pigs, goats and sheep as part of wider containment efforts.

Kailas said the process will not end quickly, warning that it may take “several years” before the disease comes under control.

He also suggested that vaccination could become a long-term measure rather than a temporary response, stating that “the vaccines may be here to stay”.

Trade restrictions remain in place

Under EU rules, trade in animals must remain suspended for three months after the slaughter or natural death of the last vaccinated animal.

This requirement means FMD eradication in Cyprus will depend not only on vaccination progress but also on sustained disease-free monitoring over time.

Long road ahead for Cyprus FMD

With ongoing cases still being detected, the livestock sector faces continued uncertainty.

Kailas said FMD presents a structural challenge for the island’s agricultural industry, reinforcing concerns that recovery will take years rather than months.
