Emergency meeting on foot-and-mouth disease with farmers

Date:

Farmers seek answers on compensation

A crucial meeting between the Agriculture Minister, farming organisations and the “Voice of Farmers” group is set to take place today, as efforts continue to resolve the ongoing foot-and-mouth crisis.

Members of the livestock farmers’ group are expected to seek clarifications from the competent authorities on a series of issues, with compensation remaining their main concern.

They are also requesting detailed information on how animals that were culled are being classified under the criteria announced by the Agriculture Ministry.

Halloumi quota issue on agenda

The meeting will also examine the issue of reducing the sheep and goat milk quota in PDO halloumi production, a matter that has sparked concern among livestock farmers.

The outcome of today’s discussions at the Agriculture Ministry is expected to determine the next steps of the “Voice of Farmers” group.

If the farmers do not consider the outcome satisfactory, the group is expected to announce new measures and possible further reactions.
