The DISY MP Nikos Sykas is due before the Supreme Court for the hearing on lifting his parliamentary immunity.
Law Office spokesperson Polina Efthivoulou, speaking on “Protoselido”, clarified that the Supreme Court must issue a fully reasoned decision regardless of the individual’s status as an MP.
She noted that after hearing and examining the arguments presented, it will determine if legal preconditions are met and decide whether to approve the immunity lift. The Law Office will present all known evidence and arguments, allowing the court to reach its own judgment.
Efthivoulou addressed how the court views the withdrawn complaint, stressing these are distinct issues. She explained the difference between no complaint existing and the complainant’s statement, quoted, that they no longer wish to pursue prosecution. Regardless, investigative authorities must probe the case fully across all dimensions.
Investigation continues despite immunity
The case’s uniqueness, per the Law Office spokesperson, stems from parliamentary immunity preventing direct inquiry against the MP. Nonetheless, the probe will advance on all other aspects, with the file forwarded to the Law Office upon completion for decisions.
Efthivoulou added this is neither the first nor last such instance handled by the Law Office, where complainants later withdraw during investigation or prosecution. All evidence goes before the Law Office for final lawful decisions; matters are not straightforward.
Sykas waives immunity voluntarily
DISY MP Nikos Sykas waives his parliamentary immunity, as stated in his written declaration.
“From the outset, I declared readiness to waive parliamentary privileges to facilitate the investigative process. Even with the complaint withdrawn, I publicly resign my parliamentary immunity,” he said.
He wishes authorities to proceed unhindered and swiftly per Constitution and law. “To those who trusted me and society at large, the goal is the justice of truth,” Sykas added.
He also condemned all forms of gender-based violence, upholding human dignity. The Law Office filed the request last Wednesday; hearing is Monday, 12 January 2026.
