Low-pressure system moves southeast
An extensive low-pressure system centred over southern Italy is moving southeast, affecting the Central and Eastern Mediterranean in the coming days, according to the Meteorological Department.
Rain, thunderstorms, and dust expected
A brief weather disturbance is forecast for Sunday evening and Monday, bringing rain and thunderstorms across Cyprus. Dust will also be present in the atmosphere at times, becoming noticeable on the surface.
Detailed forecast
Today: Mostly cloudy with local showers and possible thunderstorms in the west. Snow or sleet is expected on the higher peaks of Troodos. Winds will be southwest, weak to moderate (3–4 Beaufort), locally strong (5 Beaufort). Seas will be slightly rough, rough on windward coasts.
Tonight: Cloudy with rain and possible thunderstorms along western and southern coasts. Snow or sleet will fall on Troodos peaks and possibly other highlands. Winds south to southwest, moderate (4 Beaufort), strong (5 Beaufort) along windward coasts. Seas rough. Temperatures will drop to around 10°C inland, 15°C on the coast, and 4°C in the highlands, with frost forming at higher elevations.
Tomorrow: Cloudy with rain and possible thunderstorms, including hail along western and southern coasts. Dust will remain in the atmosphere. Light snow on the Troodos peaks. Winds southwest, moderate inland and in the mountains (4 Beaufort), strong to very strong (5–6 Beaufort) on coasts. Seas rough. Temperatures will reach 18°C inland and on the coast, 7°C in the highlands.
Saturday: Cloudy with local showers and light snow on Troodos peaks.
Sunday: Partly cloudy with very light, local rain. A brief disturbance Sunday night into Monday will bring rain and thunderstorms across the island. Temperatures remain steady.
At the time of the report, snow depth at Chionistra was measured at 22 centimetres.
