Cypriot holidaymakers stranded after yacht steering failure

Date:

What was meant to be a short holiday in Greece turned into a nightmare for a group of Cypriots, after the sailing yacht they had rented suffered a serious failure.

The group had set off from Alimos, heading towards the Argosaronic Gulf, when the yacht’s steering suddenly broke mid-sea. The vessel remained adrift for more than six hours. One of the four passengers held a sailing licence and was the designated skipper.

The ordeal intensified when rough seas forced them to put on life jackets, especially after the sails were torn. Eventually, the skipper managed to locate and install an emergency rudder, steering the yacht safely into Poros harbour.

However, their troubles continued. On their second attempt to set sail for the nearby island of Hydra, they encountered fresh problems with the anchor.

Speaking to SigmaLive, one of the passengers said the company from which they had rented the yacht is well-known and usually receives excellent reviews.

Although the group’s ordeal ended, so too did their short holiday. They now accuse the rental company’s owner of refusing to take responsibility for the yacht’s failures. Instead, he claims the group damaged the vessel and says he will withhold €1,000 of the €3,500 they paid as compensation for the alleged damages.
