Service suspension due to driver shortage
Cyprus Public Transport announced on Wednesday that the Pame Express service will be suspended from Monday, 23 March 2026, citing a lack of drivers. The company stated efforts are ongoing to find a solution and restore the service as soon as possible.
Ministry challenges suspension
Andreas Nikiforou, Head of Public Passenger Transport, told “Protoselido” that the company failed to obtain the required approval from the contracting authority before announcing the suspension, breaching key contract terms. He explained that penalties outlined in the contract could be applied if the company proceeds with the suspension.
“The argument that there is a driver shortage is a broader problem affecting Cyprus and Europe, but it does not allow a contracted company to unilaterally cancel or suspend services,” Nikiforou said. “It is the contractor’s exclusive responsibility to find staff.”
High public demand for Pame Express
Nikiforou added that the service has been widely used, with over 100,000 passengers in 2025. The route had also been expanded to serve the area near the Parliament and courts. “We were developing this route, and the company has so far been willing to cooperate on expansions,” he said.
