Europe warms faster than any continent

Date:

The latest European climate report reveals that Europe is the fastest-warming continent on Earth, with at least 95% of its territory recording temperatures above the long-term average.

The findings come from the “European State of the Climate 2025” report, published by the Copernicus Climate Change Service and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.

The European climate report shows that rising temperatures are accelerating the loss of snow and ice across the continent, while also increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.

Heatwaves, droughts and record sea surface temperatures have been recorded from the Arctic to the Mediterranean. In 2025, European seas reached their highest-ever average surface temperature for the fourth consecutive record-breaking year.

Urgent call for emissions cuts

The report stresses the urgent need for Europe to reach net-zero emissions, strengthen climate resilience and speed up its transition to clean energy through renewables and improved efficiency.

EU officials said the findings confirm the growing economic and environmental cost of climate change and reinforce the importance of a rapid shift to sustainable energy systems.

EU Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra described the data as alarming, warning that Europe is facing widespread impacts across society, the economy and the environment.

Policy targets and progress

The European Union has committed to climate neutrality by 2050, with binding targets to reduce emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and 90% by 2040 compared to 1990 levels.

Between 2023 and 2024, EU net emissions fell by 2.5%, bringing total reductions to 39% below 1990 levels.

Renewable energy reached a key milestone in 2025, supplying nearly half of Europe’s electricity, while solar power hit a record 12.5% share.
