The organisational and legal framework of the National Cancer Institute, for the creation of which the amount of 1.3 million euros has been provided in the Ministry of Health budget for 2025, was approved by the Council of Ministers at its meeting on Wednesday.
In statements after the meeting, Minister of Health, Michael Damianos, said that “today is an excellent day for the Health sector in our country, as another important step is being taken in the field of cancer prevention.”
“The establishment and activation of the National Cancer Institute is a decisive step for the substantial upgrade of oncology services in our country,” noted the Minister of Health. “The aim is, among other things, to improve coordination between all stakeholders, to create organiσed structures and guidelines, as well as to support the effective implementation of the National Cancer Strategy,” he added.
“The proposal for the creation of the National Cancer Institute was based on a comprehensive study, which was commissioned by the Ministry of Health to a specialised consulting company and was prepared under the guidance of the National Cancer Committee,” Damianos pointed out, adding that both the current situation in our country and experiences from other European and international institutes were taken into account.
“The Institute will have an important role in connecting with European and international centres, strengthening cooperation and allowing our country to participate more actively in research actions and fundraising programmes,” he noted.
The amount of 1.3 million euros has been earmarked for the establishment of the National Cancer Institute in the Ministry of Health’s budget for 2025, the Minister said.
