Cabinet approves €31 million emergency water measures

Date:

The Cyprus Cabinet approved a new emergency package to tackle the water crisis as dam levels remain critically low despite recent rainfall.

Minister highlights severe water shortages

Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou reported that inflows to the dams have reached only two million cubic meters, effectively negligible. She added that the Cabinet approved a €31 million package, contributing to total water-related projects exceeding €200 million.

Expansion of desalination capacity

The government aims to operate nine new desalination plants by the end of 2026. Over the past 18 months, two plants were constructed, with a third scheduled to finish next month and a fourth by March.

Call for public conservation

Minister Panayiotou urged citizens to reduce personal water consumption by 10%, roughly two minutes less of running water per day. Farmers have already been informed that water allocations this year will decrease by 30% compared to last year.
