The average rainfall for August in the government-controlled areas of Cyprus reached 41% of the normal amount from the beginning of the month until 9am on Monday, August 17, according to preliminary data released by the Meteorological Service.
The normal rainfall for August stands at 2.9mm, while the average total rainfall recorded since the start of the month was 1.2mm.
Highest rainfall recorded in the mountains
During the past three days, the highest rainfall totals were recorded in Platania and Saittas, with 13.2mm and 13.9mm respectively.
The average total rainfall recorded during the three-day period was 1.1mm.
For the period from August 1 to 9am on August 17, Saittas recorded the highest total at 13.9mm, equivalent to 103% of its normal rainfall for the period.
Platania followed with 13.2mm, or 96% of normal.
Athienou recorded 9mm, equivalent to 360% of normal, while Lythrodontas recorded 7mm, or 233% of normal.
The figures highlight significant variations in rainfall across different areas of Cyprus.
Rainfall totals by area
The preliminary figures show that while the island-wide average remains below the monthly normal, some locations have already recorded rainfall well above their usual levels for this time of August.
The Meteorological Service noted that the figures remain preliminary and may be revised as further data become available.
