A bank hostage situation unfolded on Friday in northern Germany after unknown individuals attacked a cash transport outside a bank in the city of Sinzig, in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
According to Reuters, the incident escalated rapidly when an armoured cash-in-transit vehicle stopped outside the bank, and a staff member attempting to enter the building was threatened by an armed man.
German authorities said several suspects are believed to be involved, with hostages reportedly taken inside the bank premises.
A police spokesperson stated that one of the hostages is believed to be the driver of the cash transport vehicle, while further individuals may also be inside the building.
“We believe there are several perpetrators and hostages inside the bank. One hostage is the driver of the cash transport. There is no danger to the public outside the cordoned-off area,” the spokesperson said.
Major police operation underway
A large-scale police operation is ongoing in response to the bank hostage situation, with the entire city centre of Sinzig sealed off by authorities.
Special police units have been deployed to the scene, while a helicopter has been circling the area as part of the security response.
Authorities stressed that there is currently no threat to residents outside the restricted zone, although the area remains under heavy police control as negotiations or intervention measures continue.
The situation remains fluid, with German media reporting that security forces are working to resolve the incident safely and determine the number of suspects and hostages involved.
