A quad bike has been recovered by crane from the sea at the Cape Greco Sea Caves after an accident in which its 22-year-old driver suffered a spinal fracture.
The vehicle ended up in the water without its driver or passenger after the young woman lost control while attempting to park. The 22-year-old and her 26-year-old passenger fell to the ground before the quad bike continued moving and plunged into the sea.
The driver was taken to Famagusta General Hospital, where she was diagnosed with a fractured vertebra and remains in hospital.
Police explain how the accident happened
In a statement responding to a video of the Cape Greco quad bike circulating on social media, the Police Communications Branch said officers received a report of the accident at around 11am on 12 August.
Police investigations established that the quad bike was being driven by the 22-year-old woman, with the 26-year-old travelling as her passenger.
“While the 22-year-old was attempting to park in the Sea Caves parking area, she lost control of the quad bike, causing her and her passenger to fall to the ground,” police said.
“The quad bike continued moving and ended up in the sea, where it sank.”
22-year-old remains in hospital
The driver was injured in the accident and taken to the Accident and Emergency Department at Famagusta General Hospital.
Doctors determined that she had suffered a fractured vertebra, and she remains in hospital for treatment.
The quad bike was subsequently lifted from the water at the Cape Greco Sea Caves with the assistance of a crane.
