The weather in Cyprus is taking an unusual turn for August, with isolated rain, thunderstorms, and even the possibility of hail forecast as an unstable air mass affects the island.
According to the Department of Meteorology, showers and thunderstorms are expected mainly over the mountains and inland areas on Friday, with unsettled conditions continuing over the weekend.
Seasonal low pressure and an unstable air mass are currently affecting Cyprus.
Rain and thunderstorms expected inland
Friday will be partly cloudy, with developing clouds expected to bring isolated rain or a thunderstorm around midday and during the early afternoon, mainly over the mountains and inland areas.
Hail cannot be ruled out during thunderstorms.
Winds will blow mainly from the south-west to north-west at 3 to 4 Beaufort, temporarily strengthening to 4 to 5 Beaufort along the south-eastern coast during the afternoon.
The sea will be up to slight.
Temperatures will reach 39°C inland, around 30°C along the western and south-western coasts, 34°C along the remaining coasts and 28°C in the higher mountains.
Fog possible overnight
Locally increased cloud cover is expected at intervals on Friday night, while mist or fog may form locally, particularly during the early morning hours.
Winds will blow mainly from the south-west to north-west at 3 Beaufort, initially reaching 4 Beaufort in some areas.
Temperatures will fall to 23°C inland, around 24°C along the coasts and 20°C in the higher mountains.
Unsettled weather to continue through Monday
The Cyprus rain forecast remains unsettled over the weekend and into Monday, with locally increased cloud cover expected at intervals.
Isolated showers and thunderstorms are forecast around midday and during the early afternoon, again mainly affecting the mountains and inland areas.
Temperatures will gradually fall over the three-day period, eventually dropping slightly below the seasonal average.
