Two dogs found dead after eating poisoned bait in Paphos

Date:

Poisoned baits in Cyprus have been discovered in the Arminou area of Paphos, raising fresh concerns over the survival of the island’s vulnerable griffon vulture population.

According to BirdLife Cyprus, the incident occurred the week before last, when the Game and Fauna Service’s Anti-Poison Bait Detection Teams found several poisoned baits and two dead dogs.

The discovery is particularly alarming because the baits were placed in the heart of the griffon vulture’s territory in Cyprus.

Poisoned baits threaten endangered vultures

BirdLife Cyprus warned that the island’s griffon vulture population is small and highly vulnerable. Its recovery depends largely on reducing deaths caused by human activities.

Poisoned baits are among the most serious threats to the species. A single poisoned animal can kill multiple vultures if the birds feed on its carcass.

The practice also kills other wildlife and domestic dogs indiscriminately, undermining conservation efforts to protect a species facing the threat of extinction in Cyprus.

Poisoning incidents rise during hunting season

BirdLife Cyprus also warned that the start of the hunting season is often accompanied by an increase in poisoning incidents.

Data collected by the Anti-Poison Bait Detection Teams show that cases increase during September and October, reaching their peak in November.

The organisation described the illegal placement of poisoned baits as a criminal practice that threatens wildlife, dogs and public health.

What to do if you find a suspected poisoned bait

BirdLife Cyprus urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid touching any suspected poisoned bait or dead animal.

Anyone who discovers a suspicious bait or a dead animal should immediately contact the Anti-Poison Bait Detection Teams on 99267916 or 99255086.

Prompt reporting can help the authorities locate and remove poisoned baits, preventing further animal deaths.
