DISY President Annita Demetriou has announced that she will seek the party’s nomination for the 2028 presidential election, following former party leader Averof Neophytou’s decision to enter the race.
Annita Demetriou said her candidacy would be put before DISY members in accordance with the party’s internal procedures.
Demetriou puts herself forward for DISY nomination
In statements following the meeting, Demetriou said her message was twofold, stressing the importance of maintaining party unity while confirming her intention to seek the nomination.
“The message I want to convey is twofold. The priority is to ensure the unity and cohesion of the party, and the democratic procedures provided for in the statute will be followed,” she said.
“At the same time, I feel the minimum obligation and responsibility, as president of the party, to put myself before the party members, and I will be a candidate for the nomination for the upcoming presidential election.”
The announcement means the Annita Demetriou candidacy will be put before DISY members through the party’s internal procedures for selecting its presidential candidate.
DISY stresses unity and party procedures
Demetriou said DISY would be present in the 2028 presidential contest and would field a candidate.
“Democratic Rally declares itself present. It will have a candidate, for the good of its members and for the good of the country,” she said.
“Everything else we will say in the coming days.”
DISY had already stressed following Neophytou’s announcement that the selection of its candidate would take place through the procedures laid down in the party’s statutes.
Neophytou announcement triggers developments
The announcement follows Neophytou’s declaration that he intends to contest the 2028 presidential election. His move came before DISY formally launched its internal process for selecting a candidate and initially left open questions over how his bid would relate to the party’s nomination procedure.
The developments have brought the party’s internal presidential contest firmly into focus more than a year before the February 2028 election.
