President Nikos Christodoulides has convened a meeting of Cyprus’ National Council for Wednesday, September 30, to discuss the latest developments on the Cyprus issue.
Christodoulides is expected to brief the political leadership on developments surrounding the Cyprus problem and on the contacts he held in New York.
The meeting comes after efforts in New York to advance the process towards renewed Cyprus talks. The Greek Cypriot side and the UN sought to arrange a trilateral meeting between Christodoulides, Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman and UN Secretary-General António Guterres, but the meeting did not take place.
Discussion on next steps
Following the briefing, members of the National Council are expected to exchange views on the next steps and efforts to resume substantive negotiations on the Cyprus problem.
The Presidency said after the New York contacts that the basis for a Cyprus settlement and the negotiating acquis remain unchanged.
The latest meeting will also come after Guterres reaffirmed his intention to continue working towards progress on the Cyprus issue until the end of his term, according to Christodoulides.
