A new return scheme for 2026 has been introduced by the Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection, allowing eligible Syrian families to voluntarily, safely and organisedly return to their country of origin.
The scheme, known as “SFAS-B’ 2026”, follows a pilot programme implemented in 2025.
One family member can remain in Cyprus
A key provision allows one adult member of the family to remain temporarily in the Republic of Cyprus and continue working to provide financial support to the family during its resettlement in Syria.
The family member remaining in Cyprus can obtain a special residence permit and will have unrestricted access to the labour market until 31 August 2028.
The provision is also significant for the Cyprus labour market, as it allows workers to remain in sectors where there are staffing needs.
The return scheme came into effect on 9 June 2026, while applications can be submitted until 30 October 2026.
Who is eligible
The scheme applies to families of Syrian nationals, including couples without children, provided that at least one spouse applied for international protection or was granted the relevant status before 31 December 2024.
Financial support
Family members returning to Syria will receive financial assistance of €2,000 for the returning spouse and €1,500 for each child.
An additional €1,000 is available to families holding international protection status.
Where applications can be submitted
Applications can be submitted at the offices of the Asylum Service, the District Units of the Police Aliens and Immigration Unit, or the Pournara First Reception Centre.
Following submission, the necessary checks will be carried out. If participation is approved, procedures will begin for the family members to return to Syria and for the adult family member to remain in Cyprus.
The Federation of Associations of Building Contractors Cyprus (OSEOK) is calling on contracting companies and its members to inform Syrian workers who may fall under the scheme’s provisions, so they are aware of the available options and can contact the relevant state services if they wish to do so.
