Kuwait’s armed forces announced in the early hours that they were responding to an attack involving missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, following several days of exchanges between the United States and the Islamic Republic.
According to a statement by Kuwait’s General Staff, the country’s air defences were responding to what it described as an enemy attack involving missiles and drones following an Iranian attack.
Iranian state television later confirmed that missile and drone attacks were underway against US bases in Kuwait, describing them as retaliation for what it called US crimes against the Iranian people.
Hostilities flare up in Middle East
Hostilities in the Middle East reignited on Sunday following a month of relative calm, repeating a pattern seen since the start of the war, which broke out in late February and has yet to find a diplomatic route towards an end.
On Wednesday, Iran attacked bases across the Middle East, including in Kuwait, used by US forces, in retaliation for American strikes on Iranian territory for a second consecutive night.
Iran warns of new strategy
Nineteen people were killed in Iran during Tuesday and Wednesday’s bombardments, according to Iranian authorities, including four people who were attending a wedding ceremony.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei condemned what he described as a “war crime”, saying a wedding ceremony had been bombed as part of what he called Washington’s attempt to conceal its defeat.
Iran, vowing retaliation, warned the United States to expect a “new strategy” designed to “destroy the foundations” of its enemy, without providing further details.
US President Donald Trump, meanwhile, warned Tehran on Wednesday that the US military remained ready to strike Iran “at any time”.
