Electricity demand continues to test the grid as repairs aim to boost generation capacity.
Demand for electricity is expected to remain at critical levels today as rising temperatures and widespread use of air conditioning continue to place heavy pressure on Cyprus’ power system.
Rolling power cuts were implemented yesterday between 4:00pm and 8:20pm after electricity demand exceeded the system’s generation capacity.
Residential consumers across Cyprus have been divided into 22 groups, with electricity supply being disconnected on a rotating basis whenever necessary to help stabilise the grid.
Repairs expected to ease pressure
According to Charis Zavallis, Assistant Director of the Energy Control Centre, faults affecting two generating units, one at Dhekelia and another at Vasilikos, are scheduled to be repaired today.
The additional generation capacity is expected to help meet demand and reduce the likelihood of further Cyprus power outages.
