The life, career and legacy of an iconic Greek actress

Maro Kontou, one of the most beloved and iconic figures of Greek theatre and cinema, has died aged 92.

The acclaimed actress, who left an indelible mark on the arts and public life, was born in the Athens neighbourhood of Koukaki on 21 June 1934 and became a multifaceted personality with a significant career in both the arts and politics.

Her death closes one of the brightest chapters in the golden age of Greek cinema and theatre. Kontou personified urban elegance, integrity, and grace, becoming a presence that left its mark on generations of audiences.

Marianthi “Maro” Kontou had family roots in the island of Psara and graduated from the Third Girls’ High School of Makrygianni. Dance was her first great passion. She studied at the State School of Dance, formerly the school of Koula Pratsika, and secured a scholarship to the renowned HLADEK school in Germany.

At the same time, she completed studies in Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, reflecting her broader interest in intellectual and cultural life.

A legendary career in theatre and cinema

Kontou’s theatrical career began in 1954 at the National Theatre of Greece, where she performed as a member of the chorus in ancient tragedies until 1958.

Her debut in commercial theatre came in 1959 alongside Dimitris Horn in Jacques Deval’s play “Romancero”.

An extraordinary career followed, spanning more than 90 theatrical productions and over 60 films, with performances that became part of Greek cultural history.

‘And the Wife Shall Revere Her Husband’ (1965)

Her role as Eleni Kokovikou, affectionately known as “Elenitsa”, opposite Giorgos Konstantinou as Antonakis and under the direction of Giorgos Tzavellas, is regarded as one of the most iconic performances in the history of Greek cinema.

The film approached marriage and Greek society’s transition towards modernity with humour and tenderness. It received widespread critical acclaim and was screened at the Berlin International Film Festival.

‘An Italian Woman from Kypseli’ (1968)

In the popular comedy, Kontou played a woman pretending to be Italian, delivering a memorable display of comic timing.

Her wit and vivacity demonstrated that her beauty was far from a cold or distant quality, but was accompanied by remarkable self-deprecation and a natural gift for comedy.

‘The Chauffeuse’ (1964)

Playing the mischievous Lili alongside Aliki Vougiouklaki, Kontou delivered an outstanding performance, showing her ability to steal the scene even in supporting but pivotal roles.

Politics and public life

Beyond the arts, Maro Kontou also played an active role in public life.

She served as a New Democracy MP for the First Athens constituency from 1999 to 2000 and again from January 2007.

She had previously served as a municipal councillor for the City of Athens from 1994 to 2002, during the mayoralty of Dimitris Avramopoulos, and as president of the Athens 9.84 radio station.

Her social work also included serving as president of the MITERA Infant Centre from 2004 to 2006, reflecting her involvement in welfare and social causes.

A multifaceted creative figure

Kontou also pursued painting, presenting an exhibition at the Antinor Gallery in 1993, while one of her works is displayed at the Vorres Museum.

On television, she appeared in numerous series, ranging from “Happy Sunday” and “Luna Park” to the contemporary production “The Land of Olives”.

Personal life and legacy

Kontou was married to Finos Film cinematographer Aristeidis Karydis-Fuchs and later to advertising executive Giorgos Doxas.

The life and work of Maro Kontou form an inseparable part of modern Greek cultural history.

Her death leaves behind an immense artistic legacy, as well as a lasting example of integrity, sensitivity and creativity that will continue to inspire future generations.
