The third vulture chick of the year has been successfully tagged by the Game and Fauna Service, marking an important stage in monitoring the new generation of Cyprus vultures.
According to a post by the Game and Fauna Service, tagging the third chick represents another significant step in efforts to conserve the species, which continues to require intensive support to recover in Cyprus.
At the same time, GPS transmitter data from the first chick to hatch this year in the British Bases recorded worrying behaviour following its first attempt to fly.
GPS tracking helps rescue young vulture
According to the Service, the young vulture landed in an area of dense vegetation, where it became trapped.
The incident highlighted the importance of continuously monitoring young birds during this particularly vulnerable stage of their lives.
The Game and Fauna Service responded immediately and, in cooperation with the Environmental Department of the British Bases and BirdLife Cyprus, successfully rescued the bird.
The young vulture is now at the Wildlife Care and Rehabilitation Centre, where it will remain until it is considered ready to return to the wild.
Technology supports vulture conservation
The incident demonstrates the important role played by GPS transmitters and modern technology in protecting rare and endangered species.
Beyond tracking the birds’ movements, the transmitters allow teams to identify cases where a bird is experiencing difficulties at an early stage, enabling them to intervene quickly.
The GPS data also helps authorities better understand the risks and threats faced by Cyprus vultures, particularly during the earliest and most critical stages of their lives.
The Game and Fauna Service said this year has highlighted the importance of continuous monitoring, rapid response and cooperation in protecting a species that continues to require intensive support to recover in Cyprus.
