Xylofagou tragedy: Witness claims owner “did not want children” on property

Date:

The tragedy in Xylofagou has deeply shaken Cyprus after two siblings, aged eight and ten, were found dead inside a vehicle in the village. The incident has prompted widespread grief and concern across the local community.

According to initial information, the children were discovered by the father’s partner after returning from work. The case remains under investigation by the authorities.

Conflicting accounts emerge from residents and landlord

Witness statements and public comments have presented differing accounts of the circumstances surrounding the family’s living situation.

Some local residents alleged that the family faced ongoing issues at their accommodation, including disputes with the property owner. These claims have not been independently verified.

A woman told reporters, “did he not know he had children? He did… he just didn’t want them.” Neighbours also say the children came out because the owner had cut off the water and gas supply and was demanding €600.

The same reports also claim that a few days earlier he was chasing them while holding a stick.

The property owner, speaking publicly, made a series of allegations regarding the children’s living conditions and supervision. He also stated that he did not wish to accommodate families with young children in the building. His claims form part of the broader set of testimonies being reviewed by investigators.

As he claimed, about 16 days ago the father brought the two children to Cyprus and asked him to find another place to live, giving him a deadline until the 6th of the month to leave.

“I go to work, I want to sleep, I don’t want to hear the child crying,” he said, explaining his decision.

When asked whether his stance complies with the law, he replied: “I don’t care.”

Investigation continues under British Bases jurisdiction

The incident took place within the Sovereign Base Areas of Dhekelia, and is being investigated by British Bases authorities.

Early reports suggest the children entered a parked vehicle, where they later became trapped for reasons that are still being examined. Authorities are reviewing how the vehicle was accessed and whether any technical or other factors contributed to the tragedy.

The bodies remained at the scene for several hours due to procedural requirements, pending forensic examination.

Authorities examine circumstances surrounding deaths

Investigators are continuing to collect statements and review available evidence, including possible CCTV footage from the area. Officials have not confirmed any final findings and have urged caution against speculation.

The wider community in Xylofagou remains in mourning as questions persist over how the tragic incident unfolded.
