The debate surrounding renewed Cyprus talks intensified after the Turkish Cypriot side rejected recent comments by President Nikos Christodoulides regarding what he described as a possible “window of opportunity” for progress on the Cyprus issue.
In a written statement, the self-declared “foreign ministry” in the occupied areas described the remarks as an attempt to mislead the international community and dismissed them as detached from reality.
Turkish Cypriot side rejects federal model
The statement argued that the Greek Cypriot side does not treat Turkish Cypriots as equal partners and instead views itself as the sole legitimate authority on the island.
The latest exchange highlights continuing divisions over the framework for future Cyprus talks, with the Turkish Cypriot leadership again claiming that the long-discussed federal solution model has exhausted its limits.
According to the statement, previous negotiation efforts failed due to what it described as “maximalist demands” and the refusal to recognise Turkish Cypriot rights.
Two-state solution reiterated
The Turkish Cypriot side repeated its longstanding position that any new negotiation process can only proceed if the “sovereign equality” and “equal international status” of the breakaway administration are recognised.
It maintained that future Cyprus talks could only lead to an agreement based on the coexistence of “two independent and sovereign states” on the island.
Turkey continues to support the Turkish Cypriot leadership’s two-state position.
Objections to timelines and UN pressure
The statement also rejected attempts to create negotiation deadlines linked to the term of António Guterres, arguing that no common ground currently exists for restarting formal negotiations.
The Turkish Cypriot side further accused the Greek Cypriot leadership of creating the impression that talks are imminent despite the absence of consensus.
The future of the Cyprus talks remains uncertain as diplomatic efforts continue under UN auspices.
Calls to end ‘isolations’
The statement additionally renewed calls for the lifting of what it described as the “isolations” imposed on Turkish Cypriots over several decades.
It concluded by stating that the Turkish Cypriot administration, with Turkey’s full backing, remains committed to promoting cooperation and stability in Cyprus and the wider region.
