President Nikos Christodoulides expressed hope on Thursday for restarting Cyprus talks, saying there is a window of opportunity before the end of the current term of the UN Secretary-General.
Speaking after a meeting at the Presidential Palace with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, the President said efforts are ongoing to create the conditions necessary for the resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus issue.
Preparations already underway
Referring to the expected arrival of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, María Ángela Holguín, Christodoulides said preparations and consultations have been taking place for some time.
He noted that meetings and contacts have been held away from the public spotlight in an effort to strengthen momentum towards a restart of Cyprus talks.
The President said he hopes these efforts will ultimately lead to renewed negotiations and a positive outcome.
UN Secretary-General personally engaged
Christodoulides stressed that António Guterres remains fully committed to the process and personally involved in efforts to revive talks.
He said the goal is not endless discussions but a process that leads to a final result.
According to the President, the completion of the UN Secretary-General’s term before the end of the year creates a specific timeframe that could help advance restart the Cyprus talks.
IMEC corridor also discussed
The President also said his meeting with the Indian Foreign Minister followed discussions previously held with India’s Prime Minister regarding the IMEC corridor initiative.
He described the project as an important economic, geopolitical and political corridor, adding that gradual implementation steps are already underway.
Christodoulides welcomed progress towards concrete actions linked to the initiative.
Government monitoring livestock concerns
Asked about an upcoming livestock farmers’ protest outside the Presidential Palace, the President said authorities remain in continuous contact with those involved.
He added that an internal meeting would also take place later in the day to discuss the broader issue of foot-and-mouth disease and related concerns.
The government, he said, will take all necessary measures where required.
