Major energy decision for Cyprus natural gas Kronos
The Cypriot government has approved the development and production plan for the “Kronos” natural gas field, marking a significant step in the country’s energy strategy.
President Nicos Christodoulides said the decision also includes agreements on key terms for the sale of Cypriot natural gas, describing it as a milestone in the exploitation of Cyprus’ offshore energy resources.
He noted that the first discovery in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone was made in 2011, and said the latest decision represents the most important stage so far in moving towards production.
First gas exports targeted for 2028
According to the President, the goal is for the first Cypriot natural gas to be sold to Europe via Egypt by 2028.
He added that further announcements are expected soon regarding energy cooperation, including ongoing advanced discussions with ExxonMobil.
“Breakfast for All” programme launched in kindergartens
The Cabinet also approved a pilot programme titled “Breakfast for All”, aimed at providing meals for children in public kindergartens.
The initiative represents a €1.5 million investment and will initially cover 3,900 children in the Larnaca district and the free Famagusta area.
The programme is set to begin in June and will be gradually expanded nationwide.
Focus on child welfare and nutrition
President Christodoulides said the initiative aims to promote healthy eating habits from early childhood and support families in Cyprus.
He stressed that the programme will be implemented in cooperation with the private sector and is open to additional sponsors and organisations.
The government’s goal is to expand the scheme across all districts and education levels as soon as possible.
Two key government priorities
The President said both decisions were part of commitments made in the government’s 2026 planning framework, highlighting energy development and social policy as central priorities.
He added that further details on the education programme will be announced soon by the Ministry of Education.
