Hamas announced on Monday that it has dissolved the body responsible for governing Gaza, signalling a major political shift and paving the way for a technocratic administration to oversee civilian affairs in the territory.
The decision ends nearly two decades of direct administration by Hamas in Gaza, where the movement has exercised control since 2007 following its takeover from rival Palestinian faction Fatah after winning legislative elections a year earlier.
The move comes amid continuing discussions surrounding the future governance of Gaza following months of war and humanitarian crisis.
Administrative transition process begins
According to a statement issued by Gaza’s Government Media Office, Mohammed al-Farra, head of the emergency committee, submitted his resignation and announced the dissolution of the Government Emergency Committee to facilitate an administrative transition process.
Hamas officials said the decision aims to allow the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG) to assume responsibilities for civilian administration under a broader framework intended to stabilise the territory.
Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem said the movement was prepared to transfer governmental responsibilities to the committee and described the decision as a step intended to advance ongoing arrangements.
Military and political role remains
Despite the announcement, Hamas is not expected to completely withdraw from political life in Gaza. Reports indicate that the move concerns direct civilian governance rather than its broader political or military presence.
Ali Shaath, head of the NCAG, said the committee was prepared to assume its responsibilities once the necessary resources and capabilities become available.
The committee has reportedly remained outside Gaza in recent months due to unresolved issues surrounding its entry into the territory.
The latest development marks an important stage in discussions regarding Gaza’s future administration, while broader questions concerning political arrangements and security remain unresolved.
