Oroklini vulture raises concern after two days on sign

Bird spotted near motorway

Concern was raised in recent days after a vulture was spotted in the Oroklini area, where it remained perched on a roadside sign next to the motorway for two consecutive days.

In a post, BirdLife Cyprus said the bird’s unusual behaviour caused concern for its health, as it was observed far from its natural habitat and in an area with limited opportunities to find food.

Identified through GPS tracking

The organisation confirmed that the vulture is named Galateia (ring code HAH), a four-year-old bird from the second group of vultures transferred from Spain in 2023.

Thanks to a GPS transmitter fitted to the bird, BirdLife Cyprus was able to track its movements and landing points precisely. Numerous reports were also received from members of the public after the vulture remained on the sign near the motorway for two days.

Health concerns but positive outcome

BirdLife Cyprus noted that capturing the bird for a health check was not feasible. However, after a few days, Galateia safely began her return journey to her colony.

While it is not unusual for vultures to cover very large distances, her behaviour raised concerns, as the possibility of poisoning or exhaustion could not be ruled out- both scenarios that might explain her presence and prolonged stay in such an unusual location.

Ongoing monitoring

The organisation thanked members of the public who contacted them and showed concern for the bird, adding that Galateia will continue to be closely monitored to ensure she remains in good health.
