Turkey declines invite to Nicosia EU summit in April

Date:

During an interview with SKAI, President Christodoulides announced that Cyprus invited Erdogan to participate in the informal European Council scheduled in Cyprus this April. Alternatively, the invitation allows Turkey to be represented by its Foreign Minister or Deputy Minister for European Affairs during informal sessions of the Council of General Affairs.

Turkey’s initial reaction

Christodoulides disclosed that the first response from Turkey was not positive. He stressed, however, that this initial setback will not stop Cyprus from continuing efforts to foster constructive dialogue and positive developments between the EU and Turkey.

Diplomatic efforts ongoing

The President explained that Cyprus also coordinated with EU institutions and member states that maintain special relations with Turkey to mediate the invitation. The goal is to encourage positive engagement rather than simply send an invitation that could be rejected. Despite Turkey’s hesitation, Nicosia remains committed to promoting dialogue and building trust through these high-level interactions.

Regional and EU context

The invitation comes amid Cyprus’s EU Council presidency and broader regional efforts to bridge EU-Turkey relations. It underscores Nicosia’s aim to play an active role in fostering dialogue in the Eastern Mediterranean while respecting EU procedures and member-state interests.

While Turkey’s initial response to Cyprus’s invitation has been lukewarm, President Christodoulides reaffirmed that efforts to promote dialogue and constructive engagement between the EU and Turkey will continue, highlighting Cyprus’s commitment to fostering regional stability.
