President Nikos Christodoulides has said he is ready to continue discussions with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, stressing that he is not afraid of dialogue or negotiations as the two prepare to meet on Tuesday.
Speaking to journalists as he left the Presidential Palace, Christodoulides said he was approaching the meeting with a positive attitude and political will, hoping for concrete results from the Cyprus talks.
Agenda not limited to confidence-building measures
Asked whether the meeting would focus exclusively on the seven confidence-building measures mentioned by the UN Secretary-General, as Erhürman had suggested, Christodoulides said the agenda had to be agreed jointly.
“There has been no such agreement,” he said, adding that he wanted to continue the discussion from where it had stopped at their previous meeting, before they travelled to New York.
He described that meeting as positive and said he hoped Tuesday’s discussions would produce specific, positive outcomes.
Nineteen proposals remain on the table
Christodoulides confirmed that his 19 proposals remained under discussion and that both the UN Secretary-General and Erhürman were aware of them.
He said he had submitted the proposals before travelling to New York and that Erhürman had reserved his response until their next meeting. A meeting in New York had not been possible despite efforts to arrange one.
The President said the proposals would be discussed at Tuesday’s meeting, adding that he was also willing to address any other issue Erhürman wished to raise.
“We are not afraid of dialogue, discussions or negotiations,” Christodoulides said.
