Cyprus hit by snow and storms, Troodos under chains-only alert

The roads leading to Troodos (Platres–Troodos, Karvounas–Troodos, and Prodromos–Troodos) are open only to vehicles equipped with snow chains or four-wheel drive due to snowfall.

Additionally, the following roads are open only to vehicles with snow chains or four-wheel drive:

  • Palaichori–Agros
  • Pharmakas–Odou
  • Fterikoudi–Alona–Platanistasa
  • Alona–Polystypos
  • Polystypos–Lagoudera
  • Lagoudera–Chantria

Roads affected by landslides

  • Kalopanagiotis – Moutoullas – Pedoulas
  • Kakopetria – Karvounas
  • Pedoulas – Kykkos – Kambos
  • Kykkos – Tsakkistra
  • Kambos – Orkonta – Kato Pyrgos

Drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution, drive at low speeds, and maintain safe distances from vehicles ahead.

Today’s weather forecast

According to the Meteorology Department, today will be mainly cloudy with scattered showers and isolated storms, particularly in the west, north, and mountains, and possibly in inland areas. Higher mountain areas expect snowfall, occasionally dense.

Winds will be strong from northwesterly directions, moderate to strong (4-5 Beaufort), and very strong (5-6 Beaufort) in the southwest, west, and north.

Seas will be rough to very rough in the west and north, and choppy to rough in the south and east. Temperatures will reach around 12°C inland, 15°C on coasts, and 2°C in higher mountains, with local frost and fog.

Snow depth at Chionistra stands at 22 cm as of the bulletin issuance.

Evening and coming days outlook

Tonight will be partly cloudy with initial isolated showers, mainly in the west and north. Transient snowfall is expected in higher mountains. Winds will ease gradually to light to moderate (3-4 Beaufort) from northwesterly directions, though moderate to strong (4-5 Beaufort) in the west, north, and temporarily east coasts. Seas will turn rough in west and north, choppy in south and east. Temperatures will drop to 4°C inland, 8°C in west and north coasts, 6°C in south and east coasts, and -4°C in higher mountains, with local frost and fog.

Wednesday and Thursday will be mainly clear with occasional increased cloudiness. Friday will feature intermittent cloudiness with isolated showers, mainly in mountains; snow or sleet is possible on Troodos peaks. Temperatures will rise gradually toward seasonal averages.
