Strong winds, tornado risk alert in Cyprus

Date:

Friday’s widespread wind field and storms

Temperature drops, significantly strengthened wind field, rain, and storms characterize Friday’s weather across Cyprus. Meteorologist Department officer Andreas Chrysanthou told CNA that very strong to gale force winds (6-7 Beaufort) with gusts up to storm force (8 Beaufort) affect the entire island.

Paphos already experiences very strong to gale winds with occasional storm gusts. Yellow warning activates from 8 AM until 10 PM covering all areas, no geographic specification needed due to widespread impact.

Local rain of mild to moderate intensity occurs alongside isolated storms already active this morning and continuing. Snow falls on Troodos highest peaks, gradually reaching lower elevations.

Temperature drop and mountain snow

Maximum temperatures drop from yesterday’s 19-20°C (23°C coastal) to 15-17°C today island-wide. Mountains see larger drops, maximum near 4°C single digits versus 14°C yesterday, representing nearly 10°C decline.

Weekend weather evolution forecast

Saturday brings slight temperature rise and temporary wind weakening but continued rain. Lower storm probability persists alongside mountain snow.

Sunday reignites wind field with rain, isolated storms, and mountain snow at Saturday’s temperatures. Monday repeats: local rain, isolated storms. New cold air mass brings noticeable Monday temperature drop continuing Tuesday.

Tornadoes and hail not ruled out

Monday-Tuesday offer favorable conditions for more mountain snow. Chrysanthou warns strengthened wind fields make tornadoes possible both coastal and mountainous areas with wind channeling.

Storms carry hail risk as additional parameter within five-day forecast. These phenomena compose weather picture through early next week.
