UN: Leaders welcomed Holguin’s reappointment

President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, and Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar welcomed the reappointment of María Angela Holguín Cuéllar as the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General on Cyprus and agreed on new initiatives related to the environment and climate change, according to a written press statement by the UN Spokesperson in Cyprus.

According to the statement, the two leaders “welcomed the reappointment of Ms. María Angela Holguín Cuéllar as the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General on Cyprus and looked forward to receiving her in Cyprus in the coming weeks”.

It is also added that the two leaders launched the Technical Committee on Youth. “They welcomed the members of the Committee and encouraged the Committee to promote dialogue and initiatives that address youth-related issues”, the Spokesperson said.

Subsequently, they met and welcomed and “appreciated the progress achieved for the restoration of cemeteries and tasked the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage to proceed with the implementation of its work”.

As it is noted, Christodoulides and Tatar also agreed on new initiatives related to the environment and climate change. “Discussions continued on demining, solar energy and crossing points. The two leaders decided to continue to keep the issues under regular review and agreed to meet again soon”, the press statement read.
