Congresswoman Titus tells CNA she urges Trump to make Cyprus’ reunification a “top foreign policy priority”

Greek-American Congresswoman from Nevada, Dina Titus urges President-elect Trump to make Cyprus’ reunification a “top foreign policy priority” in a statement to the Cyprus News Agency.

Referring to the bipartisan resolution she introduced in the House of Representatives along with Representatives Nicole Malliotakis, Chris Pappas, and Gus Bilirakis to highlight the Cyprus issue ahead of Trump’s return to the White House, Titus told CNA that she “strongly support the bipartisan resolution condemning Turkey’s ongoing occupation of Cyprus with 35,000 troops.”

“Turkey must immediately withdraw these troops and conform to the principles all NATO members must adhere to: respect for territorial integrity; sovereignty; and the rule of law. Turkey must remove its more than 200,000 settlers from the illegally occupied territories in northern Cyprus and assist in repatriating Greek-Cypriot refugees to their ancestral homes” she added.

“With dozens of Greek-Cypriots still missing, religious artifacts desecrated, and an unsustainable political situation on the island, I strongly urge President-elect Trump to make reunification a top foreign policy priority” the Congresswoman concluded.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
