The first bell rang at 7:45am today, Monday, September 14, marking the start of the 2026-2027 school year for primary schools.
A total of 52,186 pupils will attend primary education this year, including 8,919 first-year pupils. A further 14,398 children will attend kindergartens.
School and teaching staff numbers
According to figures for the new school year, 328 primary schools and 274 kindergartens will operate across Cyprus.
Primary schools will have 5,232 teachers, while kindergartens will have 1,135 members of teaching staff.
Teaching staff at primary schools returned to their schools last Monday, September 7, ahead of the pupils’ return.
Focus on all-day schools and new technologies
In a recent interview with the Cyprus News Agency, Education Minister Athena Michaelidou said the ministry’s priorities for the new school year include further expanding and improving all-day schools.
The ministry is also focusing on upgrading curricula with greater emphasis on skills, as well as making use of new technologies and Artificial Intelligence.
Presidential visits mark start of school year
To mark the beginning of the new school year, President Nikos Christodoulides and Education Minister Athena Michaelidou will visit the Constantinople Primary School in Nicosia on Monday morning.
They will also visit Agios Dometios Gymnasium and the School for the Deaf as part of their programme for the start of the academic year.
