The Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) is calling for an extension of the zero VAT rate on meat and fish, warning that the measure’s expiry could lead to higher prices and affect consumers’ purchasing power.
In a letter to Finance Minister Makis Keravnos, CCCI Secretary General Philokypros Roussounides proposed extending Decree K.D.P. 168/2026, without specifying how long the extension should last.
The chamber said the measure has helped contain the prices of essential food products, supporting households and the smooth operation of the market.
Businesses continue to face cost pressures
According to the CCCI, zero VAT has also been an important tool for food retailers and wholesalers, which continue to face higher energy, transport and labour costs, alongside broader inflationary pressures.
The chamber warned that restoring the standard VAT rate on meat and fish could negatively affect consumers while making it harder for businesses to maintain competitive prices amid continued economic uncertainty.
Call for continued price stability
The CCCI said maintaining the measure would support the market and contribute to price stability for essential food products, while strengthening confidence among consumers and businesses.
The chamber also linked the proposed extension to broader efforts to maintain economic stability and support growth.
The letter was also copied to Tax Commissioner Sotiris Markides. The CCCI said it remains available for further discussions and expressed the expectation of a positive response.
