40-year-old woman critical after enteral nutrition product administered intravenously

Date:

A 40-year-old woman is in critical condition at Nicosia General Hospital after an enteral nutrition product was allegedly administered intravenously at the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre.

According to information confirmed by SigmaLive, the product was intended to be administered through the digestive system and not directly into the bloodstream.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 14, while the woman was receiving treatment at the Oncology Centre.

Following the incorrect administration, her condition deteriorated. She reportedly developed severe breathing difficulties, a drop in blood oxygen saturation and an increased heart rate.

She was subsequently transferred urgently to Nicosia General Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

The incident was also confirmed to SigmaLive by sources at Nicosia General Hospital.

Questions remain over how the error occurred

Key questions remain unanswered about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

It has not yet been established who administered the product incorrectly, how the error occurred or whether the required safety checks were carried out before administration.

It is also unclear when the mistake was identified, how much time passed before it was detected and what measures were taken to address the patient’s deteriorating condition before she was transferred to Nicosia General Hospital.

The incident raises serious questions about patient safety procedures for administering medical products and the safeguards in place to prevent similar errors.
