The Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre has launched an internal investigation after a 40-year-old patient was left in critical condition following a serious medication administration error.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the centre confirmed that the patient was transferred to the Accident and Emergency Department of Nicosia General Hospital on Wednesday, October 14, where she remains hospitalised.
Oncology Centre promises transparency
The centre’s management has ordered an internal investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The results of the investigation will be handled with full transparency,” the statement said.
The centre added that its priority at this stage was the patient’s care and support for her family.
Citing medical confidentiality and the ongoing investigation, it said it would make no further comment.
Patient received nutritional formula intravenously
The 40-year-old woman remains in critical condition at Nicosia General Hospital following the incident at the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre.
According to a previous Sigmalive report, an enteral nutrition formula, intended to be administered through the digestive system, was mistakenly given to the patient intravenously.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 14, while the woman was receiving treatment at the centre.
Following the incorrect administration, her condition deteriorated. She reportedly developed severe breathing difficulties, a drop in oxygen saturation and an increased heart rate.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are now being examined as part of the centre’s internal investigation.
