36-year-old detained for abduction of two women

A 36-year-old man was placed under an eight-day remand by the Larnaca District Court in connection with a hostage situation on Wednesday, involving threats with a knife against two women in an apartment.

Incident details

The incident occurred around 15:30, when police responded to reports of a man threatening two women on a balcony in Larnaca. The suspect, reportedly of African descent, held the women inside the apartment and threatened them with a knife.

Police response

The scene was secured by police, including negotiators from the Larnaca and Nicosia units, as well as a counter-terrorism squad. Through negotiation, one woman was released initially, followed by the second, both unharmed apart from minor injuries. The suspect was subsequently arrested and taken to the Larnaca CID for questioning.

Charges

The suspect faces multiple charges, including abduction, assault causing actual bodily harm, threats of violence, psychological abuse, possession of a knife, and illegal entry.

Investigation

Police confirmed that the suspect has not yet provided a clear explanation for his actions, appearing unable to communicate at this stage. The investigation remains ongoing.
