20% drop in lamb and goat demand over Easter

Date:

Meat demand declined by 20% during the Easter period in Cyprus, as consumer concerns over the spread of foot-and-mouth disease impacted purchasing behaviour.

According to Costas Leivadiotis, President of the Butchers Association, reduced demand led to unsold lamb and goat meat despite lower slaughter levels.

Leivadiotis said the psychological impact of the outbreak has significantly affected the meat market, even though the virus poses no risk to human health.

He noted that sales, particularly on Holy Saturday, were “disappointing”, with many consumers choosing to limit purchases.

Concerns over spread to pig farms

The situation has intensified following confirmation of the virus in a pig farm in Paliometocho, raising fears of wider spread within the livestock sector.

Leivadiotis warned that the expansion of monitored zones and uncertainty over the disease’s trajectory are adding pressure to the industry. He described the situation as “a major battle with an unknown outcome”, comparing it to a fire that continues to spread.

While demand for lamb declined, the market is also facing a surplus in pork, further complicating conditions for producers and retailers.

Leivadiotis clarified that meat imports remain stable and are not linked to shortages in domestic supply, as local production remains sufficient.

Uncertainty over outbreak trajectory

Authorities and industry stakeholders are closely monitoring developments, as the spread of the virus could be linked to inadequate disinfection during animal transport. The presence of additional pig farms in the affected area has heightened concerns over potential further outbreaks.

The decline in meat demand in Cyprus highlights the broader economic and psychological impact of the outbreak on consumers and the agricultural sector.
