Yellow weather warning in force as storms hit island

Date:

A yellow weather warning remains in force, with rain, thunderstorms, strong winds and snowfall in the Troodos mountains expected to affect large parts of the island.

The yellow weather warning is valid from 10pm on Tuesday (30/12) until 10pm on Wednesday (31/12). It concerns thunderstorms, hail and strong to locally gale-force winds.

Rain, isolated thunderstorms and very strong winds of 6 to 7 Beaufort are expected to affect the island, mainly coastal and mountainous areas. Hail may occur during storms, while total rainfall is forecast to locally exceed 55 millimetres within a 24-hour period.

Low pressure system affects Cyprus until Thursday

A low-pressure system combined with an enhanced wind field will continue to affect Cyprus until Thursday.

Today, conditions will be cloudy with rain and isolated thunderstorms. Hail may fall during storms, while snow or sleet is expected on the highest peaks of Troodos. Winds will blow south-westerly, strong to very strong at 5 to 6 Beaufort and locally reaching 7 Beaufort along the coast. The sea will be rough to very rough.

Temperatures will rise to around 16°C inland, approximately 18°C along the coast and about 4°C in the higher mountainous areas.

Night forecast and frost risk

Tonight, the weather will remain mostly cloudy with localised rain and isolated thunderstorms, mainly affecting western and northern areas. Hail is again possible, while snow or sleet is expected on the highest peaks of Troodos.

Winds will turn south-westerly to north-westerly, moderate to strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort and temporarily very strong, up to 6 Beaufort, along western coastal areas. The sea will remain rough to very rough.

Temperatures will fall to around 8°C inland and along the southern and eastern coasts, approximately 13°C on the western and northern coasts, and near 2°C in the higher mountains, where local frost is expected.

New Year’s Day outlook

On New Year’s Day, the weather will be intermittently cloudy with isolated showers, mainly affecting the western half of the island until early afternoon. Snow or sleet is expected on the highest peaks of Troodos and locally in elevated mountainous areas.

On Friday and Saturday, periods of locally increased cloud cover are forecast. Temperatures on Thursday are not expected to change significantly, while a drop is forecast on Friday, bringing values below seasonal averages. A rise in temperatures is expected on Saturday.
