Yellow heat warning issued as temperatures hit 40°C

A yellow warning has been issued for Monday, with temperatures forecast to reach 40°C inland as the island faces another day of intense heat.

The yellow warning issued by the Department of Meteorology will be in effect from 11am until 5pm on Monday.

Tempetures are forecast to remain above seasonal averages until Thursday.

Temperatures to reach 40°C inland

Seasonal low pressure is affecting the region, with mainly clear skies expected throughout Monday.

Temperatures will rise to around 40°C inland, 31°C on the southwestern and western coasts, 34°C along the remaining coastal areas and 30°C in the higher mountains.

Winds will blow mainly from the southwest to northwest, initially light at force 3 Beaufort and gradually becoming light to moderate at force 3 to 4. In the south, winds will strengthen to force 4 to 5 Beaufort during the afternoon.

The sea will be slight.

The yellow heat warning will remain in force throughout the hottest part of the day, between 11am and 5pm.

Clear skies expected overnight

Monday night will remain mainly clear, although temporarily increased low cloud is expected later along the coast.

Winds will blow mainly from the southwest to northwest at force 3 Beaufort, initially reaching force 3 to 4 locally.

The sea will be calm to slight.

Temperatures will fall to around 21°C inland, 23°C along the coast and 19°C in the higher mountains.

Above-average temperatures through Thursday

Mainly clear conditions are forecast for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Temperatures are not expected to change significantly through Thursday and will remain above seasonal averages, extending the period of unusually hot conditions following Monday’s warning.
