Xylofagou: Witness claims father finished work and went to buy alcohol

Date:

The father of the two children who died inside a vehicle in Xylofagou appeared before the British Bases Court in Dhekelia, where authorities ordered him to remain in custody until the start of his trial on July 16.

The 30-year-old faces two charges of causing death by a reckless act. The court cited the seriousness of the case and a potential flight risk in its decision.

Claims raised during court hearing

According to information presented in court, the father allegedly finished work and, instead of returning home, went to purchase alcohol.

The prosecution argued that the tragedy might have been prevented had he returned directly to the house.

The defence rejected the claim, arguing that the children had not been left unattended because the defendant’s brother was present at the location.

Defence disputes flight risk concerns

The defence lawyer also dismissed concerns regarding a possible flight risk, stating that the father himself is experiencing a devastating personal tragedy.

The lawyer said the prosecution had requested his detention, but the defence objected. The court ultimately ruled that there were insufficient ties with the British Bases Police authorities and ordered continued detention pending further proceedings before a senior judge arriving from England.

Psychological condition highlighted

According to defence lawyer Andriana Klaidi, the father remains in poor psychological condition and will not attend the children’s funeral in Bulgaria.

Footage presented in the investigation reportedly shows the children playing outside the vehicle at around 12:10 pm and attempting to enter it.

Approximately two hours later, the children were again seen on video, this time playing inside the vehicle. Their stepmother later found them unconscious after 5:30 pm.

Investigations into the Xylofagou tragedy remain ongoing.
