Lebanese Internal Security Forces have arrested 10 Syrians over an alleged attempt to transport them illegally by sea from Lebanon to Cyprus.
Planned sea crossing intercepted
The operation was uncovered after specialised units from the Intelligence Branch gathered information about a planned transfer, according to a statement released by the Lebanese authorities.
The authorities increased surveillance to identify those involved and prevent the group from leaving by sea.
Investigators located the room where the Syrians were staying in the Al-Aboudiya area, near the northern Lebanese coast, while they waited for the planned journey.
The accommodation belonged to a Syrian national born in 1986, identified by the initials M.M. He was arrested along with the nine Syrians staying at the location.
$5,000 paid per person
During questioning, those arrested reportedly told investigators that a Lebanese national and a Syrian national were organising the sea crossing.
They also said the two alleged smugglers had received $5,000 from each person as payment for the planned journey.
The Lebanese authorities said the case forms part of ongoing efforts to combat irregular migration from the country’s northern coastline towards European countries using unsafe boats.
Investigation continues
The detainees were handed over to the competent authorities after the required legal procedures were completed, following instructions from the relevant judicial authority.
Investigations are continuing to locate and arrest the other people allegedly involved in organising the planned transfer.
